That's really dumb... They should either uses the SAME rules that the use in the playoffs, or.. have NO overtime period. I prefer having a winner.. so, I'd go with the playoff rules.

Better to save the wear and tear from OT and just have regular season games end in a tie IMO. I see nothing wrong with ties in the regular season. They are a 100% accurate result for what happened on the field over the course of 60 minutes - each team earning a half win and a half loss. It sucks to battle for 60 minutes to a tie and then walk away with NOTHING (a loss) because the other team won a coin flip and scored on the first possession.
Ties also help with sorting out the standings and ironically would lead to LESS ties in the overall final standings. Teams battling for a playoff spot or seeding for example could finish 10-6 and 9-6-1 instead of both finishing 10-6. Gives the standings another dimension to hopefully avoid some of the nutty tiebreakers in some cases.
