Four years of probation... 5 games suspension for Pitino, VACATED GAMES covering a period of 4 years.... a time that includes a Final Four appearance AND the 2013 National Championship.
This the penalty for the alleged sex scandal uncovered back in 2015. Louisville voluntarily skipped the post-season in 2015, and gave up scholarships as self punishment. But, the NCAA has much more in mind.
There were never any legal charges brought for the allegations of having prostitutes brought to the athletic dorm. Not enough evidence for the PO-Po. I guess there was enough for the NCAA.

Listened to Pitino's response - he is not very happy and hopes they'll be vindicated in the appeal. I have to say vacating games and championships is a joke. I guess *ichigan fans we'll be claiming another championship since it was them that the Cards beat a few years back.

Vacating Championships....
is that really a punishment? who exactly is getting punished? I feel the entire student body, alums, fans...all of them get punished.
It's really a stupid way to handle punishment and detracts from the sport

I listened to Pitino talk when this broke and he came across to me as a liar. I guess I wasn't the only one.
I am totally shocked the NCAA showed guts in dealing with this.

Pitino was defiant. Time will tell how smart that is.

I agree that vacating championships is cruel if the crime didn't actually impact the team's ability to win on the court or field. If players were getting paid money to come to a school, thus giving the school a competitive advantage, then fine.
FSU had an academic scandal a few years back and got a slap on the wrist. UNC's academic scandal is a much bigger deal than this IMO and so far, nothing. Meanwhile their hoops team just won another title for good ole Roy...

I don't understand the folks who worship this organization. I wouldn't trust the NCAA to pour piss out of a boot with directions on the heel. The utter lack of consistency is the basis for the movie Dumb And Dumber.

What does a school have to do to warrant being expelled from its conference, much less receive the death penalty?

What does a school have to do to warrant being expelled from its conference, much less receive the death penalty? Louisville, as a school, didn't do this.... One assistant coach apparently did. There is NO evidence that the school knew what was going on. For that matter, there is no real proof that ANYTHING went on..... But, there is plenty of testimony. To me, this doesn't compare to what North Carolina did.... As a program.... And yet, they are the reigning champs. Had the NCAA come down on them? Kentucky would be the Champs this year. ps.... I despise the NCAA.

I despise the NCAA. First, I agree that this did not rise to the level of warranting Louisville's expulsion from the ACC. However, the NCAA is correct that Petini was negligent in not knowing what was going on over a four year period, i.e., that he "failed in his responsibility to monitor the activities” of the director of basketball operations. Louisville institutionally, and Pitino personally are guilty of this. There are other major conferences college sports programs that have warranted recent NCAA investigations for serous offenses, including Penn State, UNC, Mississippi and Baylor. Some of the alleged offenses are well beyond the threshold for lack of institutional control. I am not aware of any that are in imminent danger of the death penalty, much less being expelled from their conferences.
