You've got 32 conferences and conference champions in NCAA D1 basketball. How would you de-bloat it ? I'd start by getting rid of a BUNCH of "invitees".... cut the total number down to 48, and give first round BYE's to the Top 4 seeds. So, 32 CHAMPS + 16 "at large". I would 'buy' that plan. Definitely too many at large entries...like some leagues getting 4 , 5 or 6 slots.

I like Bevo's 48 team championship ( 32 champs + 16 at large ) with some 1st round byes. Probably leave it up to the individual leagues for sending their regular season or tournament champ.

Bevo who believes, wholeheartedly, that voting is much better than playing for determining sports championships. Good grief Hen. Why would you say something like that? You KNOW it is not true. That is the kind of BS that herd would post. I have NEVER, EVER... In MANY years of posting here said that "voting is better than playing".... Never. Hold on, Bevo. Fake news. I have never once claimed to be a mind reader. In fact, I have repeatedly explicitly admitted that I don't have the ability to read minds. OTOH, you and others have on multiple occasions claimed to know what I think. Look in the mirror.

I would just be fine with going back to 64 teams...that was nice and symmetrical. Going to 65 and now 68 with those play-in games always annoyed me.

Hero: The teams which beat your so called "best team" might see things differently.
FHF: Not "so called". The best teams prove themselves on the field or on the court of play when it counts.
Jim Valvano's Wolfpack was defeated earlier by a number of teams. But, when crunch arrived, NC State was a vastly improved team. So much improved that it proved that it was the best team in the nation. In the vernacular, "that was then, this is now".
NCAA championships are won by the best teams "now".

Whatever, I have never pretended to be able to read people's minds. In fact, I have repeatedly disavowed any such psychic ability.

I would not have a problem with that other than living in the city of Dayton, it certainly brings a buzz to the town. Dayton used to have a huge party in the downtown area during the first four and was a huge success. For some reason the NCAA nixed at and threaten to pull the tournament if they continued with it??? Anyway where else in the country could you get 13,000 people to show up and watch these play in games.
