With all due respect to Jay Bilas, if ATHLETES participated in these sham courses, and thus maintained eligibility, then the NCAA damned well SHOULD BE involved. The fact that other students were also involved means nothing. The NCAA doesn't care about academic fraud. It's convenient for it to lay the blame on and pass responsibility to the universities. Sad but true.

And the reason I put stock in Jay Bilas comment is not only is he a former player and ESPN talking head, he is a lawyer. And that is where he took the stand on this not being the NCAA jurisdiction. Good point, re: Silas... Whether the coaches knew exactly what was going, IMO, will not be relevant. Pitino "did NOT know" what was going on in the dorms. He's never admitted such and no one has proven otherwise. Yet, he was personally punished because: "He SHOULD have known". I think the same standard should apply at UNC.... even more so. They actually DID know something shady was happening. Additionally, UNC had already been investigated, twice... and, found to be in violation. They should have been trying to be squeaky clean. I mean, let's face it: This is worst proven case EVER of academic fraud, and it largely centered around athletes. At the VERY least, some of these guys should be declared ineligible, and some titles should be vacated. If the NCAA lets them skate (and that certainly looks possible) they would lose ANY shred of credibility they have remaining as a 'governing body"'. Heh... I actually chuckled as I wrote that last line.... AS IF this were some kind of great loss.. North Carolina is the poster child for "Lack of Institutional Control". LOIC was once a major offense. With today's NCAA...who knows?

Everyone is citing good reasons why the P5 conference schools should leave the NCAA, and form their own sports governing body.

The many of the non P-5 schools depend on those rent-a-win games to fund their athletic departments. For example, my father's alma mater, Presbyterian, will play @wake this season, for which they will receive probably 300,000 - 400,000 dollars. That goes a looooong way in those bank accounts.

Lol. You just explained why it would be good for Presbyterian for the P5 conferences schools to remain in the NCAA. This, at a time when Nick Saban is recommending P5 football programs not to schedule Presbyterian.

The same people who whine about these games never understand enough to realize these schools are begging for these games. Personally, I think this form of wealth redistribution should end and let many of these schools support their athletic programs with bake sales. When they eliminate most or all sports at these schools MAYBE a light will finally come on...I doubt it but MAYBE.

The P5 schools can put an end to the wealth redistribution by leaving the NCAA and forming their own governing body.

The "Lack of Institutional Control" at N. Carolina was over and Academic Department (AFAM), not the athletic department. Thus, not in the NCAA's field of control.

I would have to agree as the NCAA has clearly out lived it's usefulness as a governing body. It is not the welfare system but rather the inability(for whatever reason) to govern that bothers me.

I hope it is DDay. History tells us it is not. Maybe... if 'D' stands for "Deny", or "Delay"
