Safely back in the Louisville Airport, ready to go to Pittsburg.
The total eclipse is the most unreal thing I have ever seen. It was incredible. We had blue skies, and it was HOT when we first arrived there. Over the 1 1/2 hours that the eclipse progressed, it became cooler, and gradually darker. In the last 5 minutes before total, it was pretty darn dark. Birds were starting to sing, and lights were coming on in passing cars and businesses. It was cool. But when it went total, it was like a switch flipped. It got DARK!
I looked up, I'm the second just before and saw a diamond ring in the sky. A bright ring, with a brighter diamond on the left side. Then, the diamond disappeared, and all I saw was a ring of fire. Just beautiful. The wind blew...it was actually cool. In every direction, we saw a gorgeous sunset. All the people gathered there started cheering. It stayed the way where I was about 1 minute.... Then, a diamond appeared on the other side of the ring. Just before the diamond, I saw 2-3 little red dots, on the edge of the moon. They danced around a little, then exploded into light. Almost immediately, people around us starting packing things up to get going. We did too.
We were parked literally just a half mile from I-65. We were among the first back on the highway. I would have liked to stay longer to enjoy the slow dawn. But, I needed to get back. Turned out to be a good idea. We faced heavy traffic, but we moved at a good pace. Took 3 1/2 hours to GET there, only 2 to get home. I heard I-65 was a parking lot an hour later.
If you ever get a chance to get to a total, DO IT! It's the most amazing thing you will ever see.
