Even better -- let the Big 12 implode. Go to four-team conference championships with the four champions advancing to a national playoff. If you want to appease the G5, then you could just specify the top 4 conference champions. Voila - a 16-team playoff that awards actually winning a conference. Clear as mud. Four 4-team conference championships? There are only 10 FBS conferences, perhaps 9 if the Big 12 implodes. Where would the 16 teams come from for the four 4-team conference championships? Who would sanction such a playoff? Who would administer such a playoff? It would be for the national championship of what?

That would be great but isn't practical for as long as Notre Dame remains Independent IMO. If they would join the ACC and the Big 12 were to implode, I could see it happening. But you would also get push back from some who feel like their conference has more teams / tougher road to be a conference champ who might still prefer the possibility of getting a second team in as an at large.
