I'm off to San diego for a few days and the nominations come out on Wednesday so here is my annual attempt at predicting the films and performers nominated for the Academy Awards. Here we go...
Best Actor
Daniel Day Lewis - Phantom Thread
Gary Oldman - The Darkest Hour
Timothy Chalamet - Call Me By Your Name
James Franco - The Disaster Artist
Daniel Kaluuya - Get Out
Tom Hanks and Denzal Washington would be the 2 most likely to get the fifth spot over Daniel Kaluuya
Best Actress
Saoirse Ronan - Lady Bird
Sally Hawkins - The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Margot Robbie - I, Tonya
Meryl Streep - doesn't matter, they nominate her every year.
Michelle Williams will hopefully steal the nomination from Streep. I also wouldn't overlook Jessica Chastain.
Best Supporting Actor
Sam Rockwell - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Richard Jenkins - The Shape of Water
Willem Dafoe - The Florida Project
Armie Hammer - Call Me By Your Name
Christopher Plummer - All the Money in the world
Woody Harrelson has an outside shot but Sam Rockwell was better in the same film. I could also see Mark Rylance stealing a nomination for Dunkirk
Best Supporting Actress
Laurie Metcalf - Lady Bird
Allison Janey - I, Tonya
Octavia Spencer - The Shape of Water
Holly Hunter - The Big Sick
Mary J Blige - Mudbound
This one is pretty cut and dry.
Best Director
Steven Spielberg - The Post
Greta Gerwig - Lady Bird
Guillermo Del Toro - The Shape of Water
Christopher Nolan - Dunkirk
Martin McDonagh - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Jordan Peele is the one who could take the fifth nomination, probably away from Spielberg. There's a lot of pressure on the academy to nominate a woman in this category so I think Gerwig will get a nod - Lady Bird is going to get a Best Picture nomination and it surely didn't direct itself! Ridley Scott could also get a nomination for the work he did to splice Kevin Spacey our of All the Money in the World.
Best Picture
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The Shape of Water
Call Me by Your Name
Dunkirk
Lady Bird
Get Out
The Post
Darkest Hour
The Florida Project
I just don't see I, Tonya getting a nomination. Of the movies I've seen, I'd rate it Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Lady Bird, The Shape of Water, Dunkirk and Get Out.
I do have a few more to see.
