We went to see Darkest Hour yesterday. Very good movie about the early days of Churchill as Prime Minister. Interesting that the main conflict also revolved around Dunkirk. Anyway, if there is a slam dunk for the Oscars this year it's Gary Oldman for Best Actor. Tremendous performance. We also saw I, Tonya on Saturday. Tonya had a rough 'family' life and I think the next closest thing to a slam dunk will be Allison Janney for Best Supporting Actress - her portrayal of Tonya's mother was chillingly hilarious. There might not be much drama at the AA's this year.

I agree about Gary Oldman. I couldn't believe it was him when I saw him on an interview later. They should win the Makeup award too!
I learned more about Dunkirk from the Churchill movie than from the Dunkirk movie. I can't believe you liked that. I not only didn't like it, I viscerally HATE it. It makes me angry that they blew such an opportunity to show how incredible that event was. Oh well... I watched it on a 6" screen. Maybe, it's one of those that has to be experienced on the BIG screen.
While flying, I caught another couple of movies that I really liked:
GIFTED.... I think was the best movie I've seen in the past year. I really like it. Great story, good acting. Chris Evans was good, but the little girl (?McKenna?) was incredible.
Also caught Reese Witherspoon (who has always been HIGH on the HOT scale to me) in Home Again. It's kind of a light hearted movie, a bit of a throw back to the golden era of movies. But, I found it entertaining.

On our flight home from San Diego we watched Battle of the Sexes about Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs. There were a couple pretty intimate scenes with Billie Jean and her lover that I wasn't expecting. I remember this spectacle from when it happened but obviously there was no talk of Billie Jean's love interest in the early 70's. I seem to recall wanting Riggs to win but had Billie Jean actually looked like Emma Stone I could have been persuaded otherwise. Anyway, it was a good way to pass a couple hours while flying home.

It was quite a spectacle. They played in the Astrodome. Riggs really let me down. I watched a movie about the rivalry between Borg and McEnroe. It was VERY slow.... made even more so by the fact that, in the version I saw, much of Borg's dialogue was in German. I hope to watch it again sometime soon, ALL in English.

Back then I failed to see the significance of the top rated women's tennis player in her late 20's beating a 55 year old man in tennis and I still feel the same way today. I'm 59 and I know there is no way I could have won a point (much less a game) off Serena Williams 4 years ago - I couldn't have won a game off a top college player. It was more about equal pay for the women's tour and when Riggs drilled Margaret Court, Billie Jean felt like she had to do it for the other women on tour. It was a good story and I think pretty true to the actual events. Steve Carrell as Riggs was a great casting job.

There was a pretty good documentary about that same event I watched on a plane not long ago. It was all real footage, and told the story pretty well. Personally, I've never thought women deserved "Equal Pay" in tennis... They don't offer "Equal Play". Their matches are 2 out of 3 sets. They don't play nearly as much time as the men do. And, often their fields are considerably smaller than the men's. But, none of that matters. It's all about "fairness" you see.

But then, they have to lose the thick, have the chin and nose surgery - the typical / expected Hollywood path.
