We have a friend going through a pretty tough battle with cancer so last weekend many of her friends came in from out of town to join her for a special prayer service and dinner. If any of you are inclined, please lift up some prayers for Mimi - she literally is in a fight for her life.
At dinner we were all sharing updates on our families. Our friends from Louisville's daughter married a guy who breeds horses a couple years ago. He's focused on the genealogy of the horses and as a side job, he helps very rich people purchase horses. Well, a couple years ago he bought Magnum Moon - I believe they said for $350,000 for a guy named Robert Low. To date, he's undefeated and will be running in the Derby tomorrow. His last win was at the Arkansas Derby and our friends flew down to Arkansas to surprise their daughter and son-in-law. They'll obviously be there tomorrow for the Derby. We asked our friends how much money their son-in-law could make if Magnum Moon should win and all they'd say is....a lot. So to help the cause, we placed a bet on Magnum Moon earlier this week.
Despite being undefeated, apparently Magnum Moon did not race as a 2 year old. The last time a horse won the Derby without racing as a 2 year old was 1884 - so should he win, he will reverse a long standing curse. I also think I read the favorite, Justify, didn't race as a 2 year old, as well. History could very well be made tomorrow at Churchill Downs!

1882... that’s a pretty long curse.
Plus, the favorite has won now five years in a row. That’s a record. Won’t happen this year. I’m not betting anything on justify. I like Moon better, but... I’m still not betting against a 136 year trend.
Your friend will get even richer when Magnum Moon wins the Preakness. :-)
Not sure who I will bet on.. probably Audible, and Bolt d’Oro.... plus a few more.
Cool story though. If you ever see them again, tell them to race their colts as a 2 year old.

I also boxed Magnum Moon, Good Magic and My Boy Jack. I took My Boy Jack to show. I don't know squat about horse racing but i read that My Boy Jack was good closer. Watched Good Magic win the Blue Grass back in early April. I'm sure I just threw away money.

I picked Justified and my wife picked Audible. I finally got on to Justify after seeing him on the track. He is HUGE, and he was totally unfazed by the crowd and weather. I had some on him to win. And, I bet on Audible.... But, I didn't have Good Magic, so.... None of my exacta or tri bets paid off. I lost a little on the Derby. Fortunately, I'd made pretty good money earlier in the day. Hit a $5 win on the 39-1 shot "Duck" horse in the Pat Day Mile. We were all just joking about how it was a great day to be a Duck. That's the ONLY reason I bet him. Pretty miserable day overall. Never seen that much ran on Derby day. Our seats were right on the finish line, three rows from the track. Great seats, when the weather is decent. VERY exposed when it's not. 7 hours in a pancho is no way to spend Derby Day. Still ll a fun wee though. We took our customers on a Louisville tour on Friday. Visited the Louisville Slugger museum. Have a could of pics to post a little later. 136 year Curse of Apollo is now officially broken. I guess, this HAD to be the longest active curse in ALL sport? I can't think of any other.

This shows just how close I was to making money.... I had the 7-5 Exacta (for $20) and had the 7-5-6 Trifecta (for $5). In case you're wondering, the 5 horse is the one on the other side of the 6, and... I swear, it looked to me like I'd won. It's a conspiracy. Churchill is trying to keep me down!

Watching on TV we thought the same thing. It must have been by a whisker!
Poor Magnum Moon finished next to last - he must not be a mudder! Mendelsohn should have stayed in Europe!
