Academy Award nominations were announced this morning. 9 films were nominated for Best Picture of which I've seen 4 - looks like I'll be spending some time at the movie theater over the next 5 weeks. The nice thing is some are actually on Netflix or On Demand so I might not have to see them all in the theater. I did get the unlimited Regal pass for Christmas so I guess it really doesn't matter.
Best Picture Nominees - Ford vs Ferrari, The Irishman, Joker, 1917, Jo Jo Rabbit, Little Women, A Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time...In America and Parasite
I think this comes down to Once Upon a Time...in America or 1917. I haven't seen either but they're the movies that have been cleaning up the other awards.
Best Actor - Antonio Banderas, Joaquin Phoenix, Jonathan Pryce, Leonardo DiCapprio, Adam Driver
Phoenix may be in line to be the second actor to win an Oscar for playing the Joker. Somewhere Cesar Romero is saying, what about me???
Best Actress - Scarlet Johansson, Cynthia Erivo, Saoirse Ronan, Charlize Theron, Rene Zellweger
Judy Garland is one of the true Hollywood icons - hell they're making movies about her 50 years after she died. Zellweger is the frontrunner for this category although I've never seen Ronan play a bad role and the way they made Theron look like Megyn Kelly was pretty incredible.
Supporting Actor - Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt, Al Pacino Joe Pesci, Tom Hanks
Everyone in this category has won an acting Oscar except Brad Pitt - I think that's going to change as he appears to be the favorite.
Supporting Actress - Kathy Bates, Laura Dern, Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, Margot Robbie
Scarlett Johansson gets her second nomination but she probably won't win for either role. Kathy Bates has already won an Oscar. Margot Robbie is pretty hot. Florence Pugh was a surprise and just happy to be nominated. This looks like a slam dunk for Laura Dern.
There you go, now you don't have to watch the show - and I know most of you don't anyway. Just be glad Michelle Williams and Patricia Arquette weren't nominated so there's no chance of them trying to shove their political views down our throats.

So far, I've only seen Once Upon a Time (Seen twice) and The Irishman. Not sure we will see all of them this year. Several I have ZERO interest in.
Once Upon a Time is a terrific movie. I LOVED it. Not to give TOO much away, I was fascinated by the Manson murders when I was a kid. I read Helter Skelter cover to cover, and once wrote a term paper on the way Charlie stole ideas from the Beatles, the Bible and Robert Heinlen's "Stranger in a Strange Land" to develop his warped philosophy. Brad Pitt was hilarious. I'm surprised there's not more love for Leo though. He was terrific too.
The Irishman was surprisingly enjoyable. It's a bit longer than it needs to be. But, give Martin a chance to make it as long as he wants? This is what you get. Light on the blood and guts, bigger on the story line and historical references. all in all, pretty interesting. I just wish, they'd cast and ACTUAL IRISH person instead of DeNiro. The whole movie would have made more sense.

I liked The Irishman - we watched it on Christmas after all the festivities had died down. I think DeNiro was one of the producers plus he and Scorcese are long time buddies/colaborators so I understand why he was the headliner. It was great to see Peci in a film again, I heard he came out of retirement after DeNiro and Scorcese begged him to make the movie.
I really liked Ford vs Ferrari but with no other major nominations it doesn't stand a chance of winning. The editing in the film is outstanding, wouldn't be surprised if it gets the best editing award. I went to see Little Women with my wife and our daughter - very well done and as I said above, Saiorse Ronan is always outstanding in her roles.

We watched Marriage Story this weekend. It was pretty good, but I was not impressed with the acting from Scarlet. Adam Driver was better. Although, I really dis-liked his "big scene"... seemed like a Shakespeare play for a few minutes.
Laura Dern and Ray Liotta steal the movie, IMO. They are SO PERFECT as scum lawyers.
Might watch Parasite tonight. We watched the trailer. It looks interesting, but.... man, The subtitles go by REALLY fast. Not sure we can keep up.

We also watched Marriage Story over the weekend - the fight scene at Charlie's apartment was their academy award moments. Also when Scarlett started crying in bed after Charlie gave her his crique of her performance. I didn't like Henry - he was kind of a brat like the kid in Room a few years ago.
Saw Star Wars yesterday - it was fun, pure mindless entertainment. Great way to spend the afternoon. I have to say I do like Adam Driver as an actor - he's usually very good.

Agree on Henry. I wanted to spank him. In the middle of the big FIGHT scene, I just got the feeling that the timing was too predictable... it was back and forth, back and forth... Not sure how to express what I was feeling, but... the closest I can come is: Adam was just "reading lines from a Shakespeare play"... I just didn't feel the pain anymore. It's not a knock on him, I just think it was TOO wordy. People in that kind of emotional pain don't make soliloquies. Other than that scene, I thought he was great. Scarlett also got better, later in the movie. I really hated the one long cut they gave her.... TOO long, TOO wordy. Maybe, it's just hard for any actor to pull off that kind of super lengthy dialogue? I did like the movie... overall. It was interesting. Not the "same old stuff".

As mad as they were I was just sitting there thinking - please don't hit her, please don't hit her. I mean seriously when people get that mad it's difficult to not get physical (although he did punch the wall). I'm glad it didn't go in that direction but there was a ton of emotion in that scene!

OK.. we watched Parasite. Sucky thing is, we had to BUY the movie, instead of renting it. I guess, because it's a foreign film. Pretty stupid to pay $12.99 to watch a movie at home. But, MamaBevo wanted to see it, and I always want her to be happy. So...… we did it. At least, now I can watch it over and over.... if I want. Doubt that I will. It's no "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"
It was an interesting movie. Hard to comment on it without giving away too much. Pretty funny, for much of it. I THINK the acting was good? Hard to tell when you're reading sub-titles. There is a LOT of dialogue. So, I was pretty focused on seeing the words. It is very beautifully filmed though, I can say that. And, the story was very different from run of the mill Hollywood stuff. Thought provoking on many levels.
Worth a watch.... But, you might want to wait for it to come to the free channels.

My hope is to see all the nominated movies before the Oscars - I have 4 to go. The Regal by our house is showing all the nominees the week of the Oscars and I have the unlimited Regal pass so I'll probably see Parasite that week. I was going to watch Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood last night but I got sick and wound up watching Hud (1963 Paul Newman flick) in bed. My wife is at a conference this week so at least she didn't have to watch me puke my guts out! Feeling a little better today but definitely not 100%.

MamaBevo doesn't typically like war movies.

Voting for movie awards is fine. Voting for sports championships is BS

Watched Joker last night - wow, what a dark, disturbing movie. Provided some empathy for the Joker given the storyline of the movie. And i never thought anyone could rival Heath Ledger's Joker but Jauquin Phoenix certainly did - I think he's a weird dude anyway but man did he transform himself into the Joker! I haven't seen all the best actor nominees but I can see why Phoenix has been taking all the other awards. Playing the Joker is a helluva a lot different than playing Pope Francis!
