In 1972, Steve Carlton was 27-10 with an ERA of 1.97. He pitched in 346 innings, had 310 K’s and 30 complete games to win the Cy Young Award. Making this even more impressive is the fact his team, the Philadelphia Phillies, finished in last place in their division - 37.5 games out of first. Their record was 59-97. Carlton nearly accounted for half of his teams wins.

I know ya'll find that hard to believe. But, I couldn't argue against that season. It was incredible.

Ryan was an absolute beast, Ryan played in the man's era of baseball.
All you need to know is this... Ryan threw 222 complete games during his career. Ryan averaged 10 complete games per season.
Meanwhile, no MLB pitcher has thrown 10 complete games in a season since James Shields in 2011.

Denny McClain winning 31 in 68 is still the last 30 game winner. 280 strikeouts to 63 walks is astounding.

In 1968 Bob Gibson won the NL Cy Young Award. The Cardinals lost the world series in 7 games to the Tigers - the same season Denny McLain won 31 games. Amazingly, Gibson lost 9 games with a 1.12 ERA!

Growing up I was spoiled to have the Reds to root for. They were truly a ‘big Red Machine’ and true professionals. The pitching staff seemed pretty mediocre but if you look back at their ERA’s they all would be making millions and millions of dollars today - Don Gullett (recently passed away), Jack Billingham, Gary Nolan, Freddie Norman and Pat Zachary (1976 NL Rookie of the Year). The 75/76 Reds were one of the top 5 teams in baseball history.
