Alabama basketball could be the first Tide sports team to actually play their way to a championship instead of being voted in
Congratulations Crimson Tide!

The most comical of Alabama'a 'voted' mythical championships come from the Bear Bryant years and the 6 claimed titles.
In 64 Bryant lost to Texas in the Orange bowl but claimed a NC. I don't know how you can claim a NC if you can't even win your bowl game. Arkansas, Michigan and Notre Dame were named MNCs by most of the selectors of the day.
In 65 the AP voted for Bama but Michigan State was the UPI MNC. 11 other 'selectors' of the day also voted for the Spartans.
In 73 there were 5 assorted pretend national champs (Ohio St.,Notre Dame,Michigan, Alabama & Oklahoma). Again, Bryant lost his bowl game to Notre Dame but Bama still claims a NC for that season.
In 78 Bama was named AP MNC but USC was the UPI MNC plus that of 8 other selectors. Oklahoma was also named MNC by 8 selectors.
1961 and 1979 MNC voting was mostly unanimous for Bama. 2 MNCs less mythical, 4 MNCs very very mythical.
