...my thoughts on the outcome of realignment. Both the Big 10 and the SEC are viewed as BEHEMOTH conferences. Super powers that are swallowing college football and making more money than anyone.
The ACC and Big XII suddenly can't compete? The SEC and Big 10 are head and shoulders above everyone? This is the prevailing perception right now.
I don't know if its gonna work out this way though...
I don't think Indiana and Minnesota, with massive TV money, are going to turn into powers.
I actually think, in the SEC, it will be harder for Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, etc. (the upper level SEC teams) to keep pace. The idea that "Oklahoma and Texas are going to see what real competition is" is wrong and stupid. Oklahoma and Texas ARE the real competition; Two blueblood programs with top talent from Texas. The ability to keep on top of the mountain in the SEC got even harder.
The idea that the Big XII, which is actually pretty decent in football, will become inferior is unrealistic as well. Somebody WILL rise to the top of the Big XII. They aren't all of the sudden going to be playing G5 football...in fact, the latest additions, BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF all got their asses handed to them last season upon P5 entry.
Basically, my point is, expect unintended consequences from all the major changes in college football. It has always been a chaotic sport. Don't be surprised if the SEC and Big 10 actually don't swallow all of college football like pundits think they will. The postseason will allow more teams in. It could end up being completely different than we think.

Not likely. The SEC and B1G have the two big TB networks pushing them. They’ll get the bulk of the playoff teams. This year, and every year.

Good point, Evil, about Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC and the dumb "real conference" perceptions. Fact is, to this point in time the SEC has won exactly 31 games out of 88 tries vs Texas and OU combined for a 35% success rate. The SEC has a lot of catching up to do vs those guys.

B12 discussions with ESPN/FOX have primarily been around a 24 team league.
The Big 12 is aiming to have all 12 games during the regular season against conference opponents...not sure how that will work with OOC rivalry games.

Tangential to the main topic of this thread, but didn't feel like starting another thread.
I was listening to Doug Lesmerises podcast the other day (Doug was a OSU beatwriter at the Cleveland Plain Dealer for almost 2 decades before going off to do other stuff)
He was talking about Ohio State's path to the playoff, but I think this fits well for any SEC or B10 team.
His point was he though it would be better to be the 3rd place team in the SEC or B10 than the loser of the championship game. His reasoning:
The winner of the title game will get one of the top 4 seeds. The loser of the SEC and B10 title games will probably be the 5 and 6 seeds most years. Now, the 5 seed is probably a good spot because the 12 seed will likely be the Group of 5 team, and the Big 10/SEC runner up would be a pretty big favorite. However, the 6 seed is playing the 11 seed, who is probably a really good team that didn't play in a conference title game, so they'd have an extra week rest. You compare that to the #3 team in the Big 10/SEC and a team like that will be somewhere in the 7-10 range. They play an opponent probably similar to the 11 seed, but with an extra weeks rest.
Not sure if I agree with it, but an interesting question for a coach. Would you rather be the 6th seed with one less week of rest or the 7/8 seed with the rest.

That seems a bit risky. In that scenario you would have absolutely no idea of how the B12 would compete outside of the conference. If the team or teams that make the playoff gets waxed then it could really hurt in future selection process considering it is an extremely biased process already.

They’re more likely for teams playing vs watching games in their couch. |

All of those hits over the course of a season take their toll. |
