I stayed home on Monday just so my office wouldn't have to listen to me cough all day long.
Anyway, during 30 Days of Oscar on TCM, I DVRed a Bunch of movies and watched one on Monday - The Last Picture Show from 1971. I saw it way back when but was 13 in 1971 so it was probably a bit over my head. It's about a couple of high school seniors (Jeff Bridges and Timothy Bottoms) in a dying Texas town in the early 1950's. One is dating the hottest girl in town (Cybill Shephard) while the other is having an affair with his football coaches' wife (Cloris Leachman - yes, Cloris Leachman). Ben Johnson is the man who 'owns half the town' and ties all the characters together. He deservedly won Best Supporting Actor that year and Leachman won Best Supporting Actress - probably because at 45 she winds up in bed with 20 year old, Bottoms. Filmed in black and white to capture the mood of the 50's, they do a great job of recreating the mood and mindset of the times. I thought it was a great movie and Cybill Shephard was very beautiful back in the day - you even get a few shots of her in the buff - if ever so quickly. A fine piece of film making....

I was 12. So, yea... it went WAY over my head. I remember it as being OK, but boring.
Might be time to give it another shot?

I really liked it. Watch the director's cut - it has a few extra scenes that add to the movie.

Hey Doc, wanted to let you know. We went to see Zootopia the other day. (Not much showing that we were interested in). It was a GREAT movie. Very entertaining. Some of these animated films, like InsideOut, are really incredible artistry.
It's worth seeing, if you run out of options.

Thanks for the tip - I'm also looking forward to The Secret World of Pets - the previews look great. If you want a snoozer go see 45 Years. Charlotte Rampling was nominated for Best Actress but it was a bore fest. Fortunately it was only about 90 minutes long. Absolutely no action - just a man mourning over the discovery of a girlfriend he had prior to meeting his wife. She fell in a glacier and her body was uncovered 45 years later...the wife realizes the husband has stronger feelings for the dead girlfriend and as they prepare for their 45th wedding anniversary party, she's trying to come to terms with this new revelation....
