I've been an avid college football fan since 1969 - I still watch the Reds, Bengals and Xavier basketball but Ohio State football is my one true sports passion. I can't even watch NFL games anymore (except the Bengals). The refs, replay and endless stoppages of play to go up to the booth for a closer look have rendered it unwatchable. Yesterday the Bengals got a taunting penalty with 12 seconds left in the first half after they appeared to held the 49ers to a FG try. The Bengal defender pointed at an SF player and the ref threw a flag. Next play SF scores a TD - Bengals lost in OT. Unbelievable.
Anyway, back to the transfer portal and NIL. I think both are ruining college football. They've made it too easy for players to just move on. It used to be players had to wait their turn, work hard and ascend to the top of the depth chart. Now, you have players leaving all over the place - I just read the Auburn QB is leaving and he was their starter until he got hurt. It's ridiculous - you can't yell at a player or he'll transfer. And the money places are throwing at kids who have never played a down of football is disgusting. I love college football but what's happening now is only going to make the rich get richer and the rest will be left with nothing but scraps. I think it's horrible. We've developed a system where quitting is preferred over working your butt off and earning the right to play. Congratulations to the jackasses who created this mess!

I couldn't agree more. I still remember NFL football before free agency. The level of devotion to your team as different. Once they started moving all over the place, you just couldn't invest emotionally in your team in the same way. I remember, we used to joke: We don't cheer for the TEAM anymore, just the uniforms.
It was hurting the NFL.... until, fantasy football arrived to save the day.
Texas just got a commitment from the big QB they wanted: Quinn Ewers. Took him away from Ohio State. But, what are the chances he stays with us for 3 years? I'd guess, less than 30%. Hell, he might not make it year 1.
We also just lost a LB recruit. We probably needed a LB more than QB.
It's just insane. We're gonna need a LOT more pancakes!

The Texas A+M and USC QB's from last season are also in the portal.
As for Ewers, when he came to Ohio State early I doubted he'd ever play a down. I was wrong, he played the final 2 downs in OSU's 56-7 win over MSU - both handoffs. But he came in in August, Stroud was a full year plus spring ball practices ahead of him, same with Miller (he's in the portal too) and McCord had spring practice. Had he remained in HS he could have come in, sat behind Stroud for a year and then have a huge chance of starting after that. You're right, he won't be around in 3 years - he'll go pro as soon as he possibly can. I'm not sure what the QB room looks like at Texas but if he doesn't start next year he'll probably go somewhere else. He was the top recruit in the country so he has to be pretty damn good - plus with NIL he's not going to worry about where his next meal is coming from.

Completely agree. It used to be perfect. Everyone had five years to play four seasons. Anyone could transfer at any time for any reason BUT you had to sit out a year. Made you really think whether it was worth it or not. And there was just ONE signing day, the first Wednesday in February.
Today we have "grad transfers" where a player plays his entire career at one school and then goes somewhere else for their final season - weird. Then they added an "early signing day" which is tomorrow Dec 15th just a week or two after major coaching changes have occurred. Why do we need two separate signing days just 6-7 weeks apart? And now we have the portal where basically every player is a FREE AGENT every year. It really sucks IMO.
Wish they went back to the way it was. One big signing day in Feb, well after the coaching changes have settled and seasons / bowls are done. Want to transfer? Fine, but you have to sit out a year so you will need to really consider whether it is worth it and choose wisely.

We had a system where the coach could quit one day and be coaching somewhere else the next, while players were sitting out for 20 months because they wanted to transfer.
Coaches were paid millions but players couldn’t even use their own name to get a chicken sandwich?
Now is better for the athletes, which is what college football is all about.

Portal is taking away depth so now 4-5 stars won’t be on a bench....Talent may begin to spread out - is that a bad thing?

I'm fine with the players getting money from the NIL. I've always thought it was nuts to have the PLAYERS be the ONLY people not getting rich from this game. But, I do think they need to change the way these portal transfers are happening. It's SO EASY now, it's impacting the quality of the game. I'm not sure what the right answer is, but... it needs to be a little tougher to swap schools. Make it harder for the coaches too, if that's needed. But,we need more stability.

Dabo has been very vocal about the portal and NIL over the L2Y and he's taken some heat for it, but I think he's largely been correct that some aspects are very bad for football.

Oh no, these kids now have the autonomy to change schools just like everyone else in our free country, and it is ruining my entertainment. Meanwhile they stick almost two hours of advertisements into the game and we just go along with it. How is that entertaining? The sport is being ruined, but I wouldn’t say it is because the athletes are now empowered.

.
Outside of the top guys in the portal, most will get passed over for high school recruits.
764 FBS scholarship players have entered the portal since 8/1. 17 have officially withdrawn, which leaves 747. 123 have found a new home, which is 16.4% of the players.

I just want it to be something a little tougher, so it's not completely disruptive to the process of trying to build a team. All college football teams lose 25-30% of the roster every year, naturally. That requires some planning to keep the team cohesive. When you start losing >50% every year. Or, you lose EVERY player at ONE position, it destroys the team. I feel the same way about 1 and done in basketball. It's ruined the sport. It should be a 2-year minimum. I'd be fine with a limit on commercial timeouts too. They take all the air out of fired up home crowds.

Nil, portal, coaching defections....sure it's a mess but I still say the academic fraud side of big time CF is the most deplorable.

I think we’ll get a glimpse of competitiveness with Bama and Cinncy.
