Watched this documentary on the plane ride to Vegas. It’s outstanding. I laughed, I cried, I was amazed.
It’s so personal to me in so many ways. One is: Nolan today looks almost exactly like my Dad in his later years. It’s really amazing. Actually, they sort of looked alike in their younger years too. I never really noticed that.
This documentary does a great job of showing why Nolan was just so darn fun to watch. Every game might be a no-hitter.
They showed many of his 51 major league records. Yes, even the walk record. The one I didn’t know about that it simply incredible is:
Lifetime lowest batting average against: 0.203
The man pitched for 27 years. Over that lengthy time, he was still the hardest pitcher to get a hit against. If that’s not testimony to his greatness, I don’t know what is?
One year, he won 21 games, had 2 no-hitters, and broke Koufax’s 382 K’s in a season …. And didn’t win the Cy Young.
Nolan didn’t care. But his wife, Ruth damn sure did. She is just as amazing as Nolan.

27 years is incredible aside from everything else. How do you maintain the “hardest to hit against” for 27 years ?

And Jason de Grom who all the WAR maniacs claim is the greatest pitcher ever can’t go 3 starts without landing on the DL.

When Nolan brought his 'A' game he was soooo dominant but in 27 years, no Cy Young awards because his B,C and D games showed up

27 years is incredible aside from everything else. Truly. 27 years is a lot of wear and tear on a pitchers arm. All those wins and losses have his name on them. Nobody bailed him out.

Ryan - 7 No Hitters, 0 Cy Young
Clemmons* - 0 No Hitters, 7 Cy Young
Both incredible feats. At the end of the day, still a team sport.

The collective record of the teams of bozos that Nolan played with was 2104-2048 (,507)
Nolan's W-L record was 324-292 (.526)
The 'bozos' won 51% of the time and Nolan won 53% of the time in his decisions.

Hen, if you have Netflix, this documentary is on right now.
If you are a baseball fan, I think you'll enjoy this film. Nolan gives a great deal of credit for his success to a pitching coach name Tye Morgan...
In baseball, coaching probably matters more than in any other sport. I think we might agree on this.
It's a great show. I really hope you will watch it.

Totally appreciate your adoration for Nolan, Bevo, so this will be my final 'reality check' type post...promise ( unless you ask for a reply)
The all time undeniable , untouchable greatness """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" All time strikeout king All time no hitter king
The all time factual, untouchable other side of the coin """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" All time base on balls king All time wild pitch king
it all adds up to a career .526 winning percentage which ties for 535th best all time.
Then again maybe winning and losing should have nothing to do with sports or sports greatness

Then again maybe winning and losing should have nothing to do with sports or sports greatness Of course winning and losing matters. In individual sports, it matters more than anything. In team sports? It's not the whole story. Plenty of the "greatest" football players played for teams that were not great at all. In 1987, Nolan was 8-16. But, he also had the lowest ERA in the league. He was also among the lowest in walks+hits per 9 innings that year. So, his wildness was under better control by then. Does that mean he was just an 'average' pitcher? In July that year, Nolan was 0-5 in July. The Astros scored 7 runs, TOTAL, in those 5 games. In a couple of those games, a no-hitter wouldn't have been good enough. He was a terrible batter. I'll give you that. I think, 0.110 lifetime. But, I was there the night of his FIRST at bat in the Astrodome. A HOME RUN over center field. No shit. Everything about him was legendary.
