Also Bevo, another interesting and pertinent factoid to this Nolan discussion :
The combined record of Nolan's 4 teams when he was on their rosters -
W-2104 L-2048

You're pretty good at looking at less than 100% of the story. Pitchers don't WIN games by themselves. They skew the %'s, for sure. But, baseball remains a TEAM game.
Agree about 65%. Pitching is still the the most dominant component of Baseball A dominant pitcher can win consistently even with a mediocre club. For example.....Walter Johnson and his perennial last place Senators. Steve Carlton and the bottom dwelling Phillies come to mind also.

A bit worrisome for the NFL bound kids but fun for the other ones, I guess. Which is, the VAST MAJORITY of college players. They aren't going pro. Let them have some fun.
Bevo, I've always felt that an all inclusive post season championship and a bunch of post season exhibition games could co-exist for college aged football........but allow ALL the teams and players the choice of playing in the PSEGs for fun. Those kids on losing teams work and try just as hard as the big winners and might deserve an opportunity for a post season vacation game too. So, why not let all the FBS teams ( not in playoffs) pair up and play in one of these events , if affordable by their schools,

You can discard these facts if you feel that 'winning' is insignificant in sports. 100% of a story tells you more than a select smaller part of a story. I don't think Gibson threw quite as fast as the numbers offered in this thread In light of the fact they had no easy way to measure any and every pitch as we do today, these guys couldn't out pitch Gibson if their life depended on it. Fun to speculate though.
Not discussing anybody 'outpitching' anybody else....only fastball velocity. Agree, Hero, we can only speculate. How fast was Walter Johnson or Bob Feller ? I think they tried to measure Feller's fastball with a speeding train in some fashion...ha. BTW, I think Gibson's 1968 season remains one of the most astonishing individual performances in any sport's season.

Agree with both of you. The CFP is slightly 'better' than the BCS and all the previous mythical crap but still remains the dumbest championship system among all team sports. In my view :
Pre BCS = 100% mythical
BCS = 90 % mythical
CFP = 85% mythical
My all time favorite make believe national championship seasons were 1980, 1973, 1960, 1951, 1935,1927, 1926 and 1921. Each of those seasons featured 5 mythical national champs .

Cue BH... to tell us Nolan was a minor-league hack. I NEVER saw a pitcher more fun to watch. Every game was a potential no-hitter It was also fun watching the 46 year old Ryan beat 26 year old Robin Ventura's ass Oh boy...here we go with Nolan again:
Facts """"""
Nolan is MLB's all Time leader in Base on Balls. He's kinda the Brett Favre of baseball. Favre is the all time NFL leader in career interceptions. Nolan finished exactly 32 games over.500 in his 26 year career or an average of 1.2 games per season over perfect 'average'....with the 3rd most losses in MLB history.
Nolan finished outside the top ten pitchers in 3 of the 4 franchises he pitched for in winning %. You can discard these facts if you feel that 'winning' is insignificant in sports. In the words of Joe Posnansky from his 'Baseball's100) book : "Of all things pitchers do, Nolan Ryan could do them better and of all things pitchers do Nolan Ryan could do them worse" 100% of a story tells you more than a select smaller part of a story.......Sports, science, business....everything. IMO, if Nolan had command (control) of his great stuff he could be in the GOAT discussion and would have posted an impressive career W-L record....but ....

A good chance of that, Bevo. Without taking out McCoy the mighty Tide might be 0-8-1 vs the Horns

I think the betting favorites for a 2001 national championship would have been
1) Miami 2) Oregon 3) Tennessee 4) Forida

You can go back and debate and speculate about this sport's ridiculous mythical championship history for 150 years.

At one time, way back, the Ivy League suited up some FSU type players of the day......called 'em "ringers". They were brought in for football when the Ivy ruled the sport.
