Really ? Didn't know that. Memphis - UCF is a quarter final game ? Stanford-USC is a quarter-final game ?
Also mythical Bevo, if you speak the truth then there is absolutely no need for any committee to gather and vote for the 4 semi-finalists. All they have to do is seed them, right ?... since the quarter-final games automatically yield the final four....right ?
What were the official quarter final games last season ?

I didn't say ALL games were quarterfinals... but, some are. Clemson-Miami Ohio State- Wisconsin TCU-Oklahoma Georgia-Auburn These are all, essentially, quarter final games. Some of the teams KNOW they advance with a win. Some of them need to win just to get into the "voting pool". But, the affect is the same. Most of them know they are OUT with a loss. It's just a different format hen. It's no less valid. And, it works.

The silly season is upon us. I do note among your rationalizations that you conveniently neglected to include the single most important consideration, i.e., how each team performs vs. its competition. I didn't neglect to include it.
I don't consider it relevant for the purpose.
If a team beats the snot out of 12 weak teams by 60-0 scores, why should I, or anyone care?
Because you are incompetent? Or biased? What if the best P5 team would have been favored over the same 12 weak teams by an average of 21 points? Don’t forget that you agreed that a dominating win over a weaker opponent can be more impressive than a close win over a stronger opponent. A hypothetical for you: Suppose the first 3 slots in the CFP were locked up, and the final slot came down to a decision between 2 undefeated teams with identical schedules. Which team should be awarded the opportunity to compete for the CFP national championship?

Why can't we have Ohio State vs. Alabama next Saturday for the extra spot??

Why can't we have Ohio State vs. Alabama next Saturday for the extra spot?? because schools are having final exams next week. They do still make an attempt at being students.

Which team should be awarded the opportunity to compete for the CFP national championship? Any takers? If only it were that easy. It is literally impossible for two teams to play the same schedule. If the schedules are "essentially equivalent", then the committee will decide based upon other criteria, like Conference Championships, and the "eye test"... which, is nothing more than the committee's politically correct way of saying they DO what you want: Ie, they consider how easily a team defeated it's foes. They do not want to codify something that encourages poor sportsmanship, leading teams to run up the score on every opponent. But, they're not blind. They can, and do factor in MOV, and every coach out there knows it.

They do not want to codify something that encourages poor sportsmanship, leading teams to run up the score on every opponent. But, they're not blind. They can, and do factor in MOV, and every coach out there knows it. 1. The first thing I said was that it was a hypothetical. 2. Both teams were undefeated, and thus conference champions. 3. I’m not sure what the “eye test” means. Better looking uniforms? 4. So, it really boils down to MOV, and your silly notion about sportsmanship. What if the margins of victory were the same until the final few seconds of each game for each team. One team ran off the final minute in victory formation while the other team kept its starters in and successfully scored in the final seconds, increasing a 50-point lead to 57? In any event, you have successfully exposed the reason why MOV should be balanced against SOS. Congratulations. You are finally beginning to catch on.
