What if the playoffs had a play-in game where #4 meets #5 the week after the conf Championship games?

It does.. Just a very small field. A small field 'Invitational" bowl event A PLAYOFF among the 4 Best teams selected from a field of teams having a legitimate claim as being "the best".

A small field 'Invitational" bowl event A PLAYOFF among the 4 Best teams selected from a field of teams having a legitimate claim as being "the best". Yep. Quarter-finals this weekend and then semis later.
Based on W/L, SOR, SOS, conference titles, etc.
11/12 times the top 4 teams chosen have had the highest SORs.

Better yet...what if FBS had playoffs ? It does.. Just a very small field. You know full well that the CFP is not an FBS playoff. You know that the CFP makes no such claim. You know that the NCAA does not sanction the CFP. You also know that tigercpa has provided conclusive evidence that the CFP only claims its winner to be the “CFP national champion”. You can twist the truth all you want, but as long as the CFP doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t, I don’t have a problem. Just as I wouldn’t have a problem if the Gasparilla Bowl considered its winner to be the “Gasparilla Bowl national champion”.

The silly season is upon us. I do note among your rationalizations that you conveniently neglected to include the single most important consideration, i.e., how each team performs vs. its competition.

I don't consider it relevant for the purpose.
If a team beats the snot out of 12 weak teams by 60-0 scores, why should I, or anyone care?

If the CFP people just were honest and called the event the Dr.Pepper Bowl Series or the ESPN Invitational or something like that I would have no problem...they could 'invite' whoever they wanted. Its criminal to disguise it as some sort of FBS playoff...but the cartel can get away with it because CF fans have been brainwashed for over 100 years into thinking that 'voting' is the only way to determine its champion... Most gullible fans in sports, more so than pro wrestling fans that at least know its a show.

That's usually the first question I get from someone I meet for the fiorst time over there...."do I watch wrestling and who is my favorite wrestler?"
When I tell them it's fake/scripted, you would think I just shot their dog or something.

You know, of course, that no other bowl claims to be any sort of XXX Bowl National Champion.
The winner of the CFP by formal / titular is known as the CFP national champion, or by millions simply as "THE national champions", or college football's national champions. The terms are synonymous and interchangeable.
Everyone knows what it means and represents, including you.

CF fans have been brainwashed for over 100 years into thinking that 'voting' is the only way to determine its champion I think YOU'VE been brainwashed into thinking a bloated single elimination playoff is the ONLY way to determine a National Champion. It's not.
