So there are 3 SEC games this weekend featuring true conference match-ups...
Tennessee vs Missouri Arkansas vs Mississippi St Mississippi vs Vanderbilt
The other 8 SEC teams are playing, essentially, scrimmage/body bag games. With a 9 game conference schedule we may have had these match-ups this weekend - I don't think any of these match-ups occurred earlier this season...if one did, i'm sure there are 4 match-ups that would work....
LSU vs South Carolina Texas A+M vs Florida Alabama vs Georgia Kentucky vs Auburn
Obviously, 4 teams are going to get an additional loss which hurts rankings, playoff possibilities, etc. I think all conferences should play by the same rules, it's that simple. And when you lay it out like this it's obvious why the SEC does it the way they do, it's the difference between 8-0 and 4-4. It enhances the opportunity to get 2 teams in the playoffs as opposed to 1. Personally, I don't even think Notre Dame should be considered - they chose to play by there own rules, why include them. But what is and what could be is pretty eye opening when you look at the match-ups that could be this weekend.

doc definitely has a good point
One thing we don't get to see is Alabama play good SEC East teams. Tennessee is their locked-in rival, and they have been awful for years now. LSU played both Georgia and Florida this year
One solution might be to get rid of divisions...If you played a 9-game conference schedule, no FCS, and had 4 solid locked-in rivals and a rotating schedule with 5 games, you might get a better, more watchable schedule
I wouldn't mind seeing the SEC expand either...how would you like to see Clemson, VT, and FSU in the conference?? They are practically SEC teams anyways
Big 10 should get Syracuse, BC and Pitt or UConn. Truly capture the Northeast. Nebraska was an awful addition

What is coming, I think... is a complete meltdown of the CFP concept.
I see the following happening:
1) Clemson wins out and is IN the CFP. 2) Notre Dame Wins out and is IN the CFP. 3) Bama and Georgia both win out, but... Georgia wins a close, exciting game over Bama in the CCG, and BOTH get re-invited to the CFP.
Let out will be THREE P5 Conference champs, all having 1 loss.
No Michigan or OSU. No OU No Wash St.
CHAOS
And, then... a LOT of talk about expanding the playoff field to 8, with first round games played on home campuses.

An easy fix would be to eliminate the FCS games and play an extra conference game. But why would the SEC change anything since they are almost being rewarded for it. At the end of the season the committee is looking at Win Loss records and with the FCS games it certainly bolsters the SEC for getting more teams to be ranked highly.
One thing that the committee has been consistent on was that for P5 teams only, the number of losses is the top criteria. That being the case then how does LSU jump 3 1 loss teams???

I'd keep that one...being an old fart traditionalist
BTW, that 16 team playoff is still fraud with 5 FBS champions left out

I would HATE that... It would make NCAA football in to BBall.
One long exhibition season, followed by a one & done tourney for all the marbles.
No thanks.

Well, if the SEC got rid of divisions and maintained a select # of locked-in rivalry games, I'm sure Bama would stick with Tennessee, Auburn, and probably LSU. Tennessee would probably have Florida, Alabama, and maybe Kentucky or Vandy. LSU? Bama, Florida, Ole Miss

Dude, look at the first round match-ups...you would get matchups NEVER before seen in college football, and you would be guaranteed them EVERY SEASON. Texas playing in Death Valley Clemson? Ohio State in Baton Rouge??? How often do we get these OOC matchups? probably about 10 good ones a year if even that much....

If we had a 16 team playoff, it wouldn't be THOSE matchups... it'd be Clemson at home against UAB, or Buffalo. It would suck.

According to Sagarin, Ohio State has played 2 top 30 teams this year. 2 Way to schedule.
I can’t wait for next weeks discussion of scheduling.
Good grief

A 16-team playoff is dumb.
An 8-team playoff actually becomes a bigger tournament if you guarantee each P5 champ a spot. Then each conf champ game is essentially the play in. So an 8 team is really 13 in that sense....
5 champs, highest ranked G5 champ, 2 wild cards & seeding determined by committee rank.
I still think 4 is the right number.
The question then is, what does expansion do to the meaningfulness of the regular season, which is a priority for CFB (and rightfully so).
Partially this depends on how you define “meaning.” Does it potentially decrease the importance of any single game - say, a Bama-UGA SECCG?
Yeah.
