Oh, well... excuuuuuuuse me. I should have said: That's not the ONLY way such viruses are spread. I didn't say they "CAN'T" be spread that way. I know what some people are saying, regarding the mechanisms for spread. Back in May, they were all saying respiratory droplets were the primary mechanism. Now, new studies are suggesting otherwise. Previous, in-depth studies of other similar viruses have shown that aerosols are also important. I have NEVER told anyone not to wear a mask. I have been wearing a mask in public for months now. I think it's justified, at least until we understand more about this virus. I just get tired of hearing politicians, like my Governor today, saying "wearing masks will STOP the spread of COVID. They won't. At best, they will slow the spread. More is needed to "stop" it. You remain hopeless. It's impossible to have any kind of reasonable discussion with you about anything. I learned that long ago. Nothing has changed. So, this is the end.
I agree, we cannot have a reasonable discussion. You ask for science, then deny the science by saying the virus does not spread by droplets. When I ask are you suggesting the virus doesn't spread by droplets, you deny it, saying that would be stupid to suggest that. When I show that you your own words saying the virus does not spread by droplets, you say you shouldn't have said that. At that point, you have nowhere else to go, so you end the discussion.
Of course this is not a reasonable discussion. You ask for science, ignore the science, and contradict yourself. Because you can't handle that you've been wrong multiple times, your response is that I am the unreasonable one, so you put your fingers in your ears. I'm the unreasonable one, in your mind, because I'm causing cognitive dissonance. You are pro-science, but believing the science I put in front of you would mean that some liberals in the government are correct. Of course it is easier just to say I'm being unreasonable and stop the discussion, than to face this cognitive dissonance. what science?? there is no science to it...show us something reliable or valid about any of this
we never wore masks or social distanced for any other virus...we never contact traced or quarantined healthy people or shut down the economy for any other virus....what are the death rates???
if you can't tell everything has been politicized, then you are lost in a sea of stupid
I would love to see actual science in action!

How is what I said despicable? There are very few reasons to not wear a mask. Two reasons we see being used are anti-science and anti-government sentiment. There is one very compelling reason to wear a mask, and it is live thy neighbor. It is why I wear one in public. Can you explain to me why someone would not wear a mask, unless they felt more strongly about being anti-government or anti-science than loving thy neighbor? What is despicable is not wearing a mask. A very simple and very doable thing. That you call me despicable for calling out those not wearing is the exact thing that makes this situation so frustrating. There's absolutely no scientific proof that masks or social distancing work...maybe you don't know what science is, but it's measurable proof
any reasonable logic and science with COVID got thrown out the window when the media turned a blind eye to the riots
even the testing is all jacked up, in all sorts of ways
can you definitively say when the Virus arrived? it's true origins? MANY people had weird flu-like illnesses back in FEBRUARY
the "science" behind all of this has been shot to hell
It didn't take me but a few seconds to find a blind study that showed wearing masks could be effective at reducing the spread.
I've just seen fewer and fewer masks in public, and have not seen evidence that wearing a mask makes things worse. Since it is at worst neutral, and maybe even effective, I've been surprised and disappointed.
It shocks me that the places with the most spread and the least mask wearing are also the places we'd expect to see people practicing "love thy neighbor", the aptly named Bible Belt. It seems to me that being anti-government or anti-science and "pro-freedom" has trumped this love thy neighbor mentality.

I think it is fairly obvious why actions were taken. Death rates, contagiousness, longer incubation period, the sick requiring limited resources, seeing what happened in other countries and the overall unknown. I said before going in - we won't know if we did too much, but we will know if we did too little. And idiots will complain if it appears we did too much.
I get it, it is frustrating. In discussions I've heard people complaining about those who insisted on opening back up, claiming that lives were less important than money to these people. I reminded them that we are lucky not to have steady income, some people's lives have been completely turned upside down due to shut downs.
Of course I can tell it has been politicized, I've complained about that in this thread. I understand how shut downs, school openings, etc. are political. They are difficult decisions with real implications.
But the masks. There is nothing political about wearing a mask during a pandemic. There is nothing political about requiring a mask in public during a pandemic. What has made it political are the people ignoring science, scientists, and health professionals. They are lashing out at their governments not because wearing masks is unreasonable, but because they just want to be anti-government and "pro-freedom".
Businesses opened/closed? Huge effects either way. I get how it is political.
Schools opened/closed? Huge effects either way. I get how it is political.
Having to wear a mask in public? Not political.

Agree 100% with Aufan. The idiocy is astonishing and it's inspired from the top....the narcissistic, ignoramus, spoiled snot toddler in the White House. The USA used to be looked up to among the advanced nations. Now we're pretty well pitied based on such a large portion of us worshiping at the altar of idiot trump, and the blind sheep 'cult' ( aka 'the base' ) can't seem to ween itself from the hypnotic spell of the toddler's apologists at Fox News. We're 4.3 percent of Earth's population with nearly 25% of Corona problems. We are NOT the envy of the world in how we are dealing with the pandemic as our idiot POTUS has claimed over and over. Furthermore we have great resources to fight and control it.....world class medical research universities, hospitals, physicians and infectious disease scientists. No excuses. It's just big big time DUMBTH ! The national leadership's war against science is one of the dumbest things in our entire history...right up there with the Civil War. Gonna miss CF fun with you guys this fall but it's not important. SEC football is not even important now. So stay safe, do the right thing, help fight the virus and let's start to make America intelligent again this fall. Over and out from deep in the Blue Ridge. We are using the science. There is no reason, based on science, to not re-open the schools. Risk *to* K-12 children is STAGGERINGLY LOW. Risk *from* children is also low. See Dr. Mark McDonalds words, he convinced the Orange County School Board to open with no masks and social[ist] distancing: /photo/1

"Social[ist] distancing", and we wonder why this is political. It is people who quote a psychiatrist's appeal to emotion and claim they are using the science, but are just using the pandemic and the response as a straw man to argue against socialism.
The most appalling thing to me is the love thy neighbor aspect. If there is something simple you can do to protect your neighbors life and health, shouldn't you do it? But apparently that is less important than being anti-government. Jesus is rolling over in his grave right now.

You could not have proven his point more succinctly. Bravo! He is using science, with a fact-based, rational argument. Note he didn't have to say he was "on the side of science".

I guess everyone on this board has gone senile.

Jesus is rolling over in his grave right now. To all the other posters on this board, I apologize for being so harsh to AuFan upon his return. But, I will point you to this statement as evidence to why I think he is despicable. He will not debate complicated issues in good faith, seeking to teach or learn. Rather, he ignores points he doesn't like, presents other insignificant data, twists your words into things you didn't say, and then this... an unsolicited attack on the very foundation of your faith. I wish real conversation was possible. There's intelligence in there, somewhere. But, it's buried deep beneath a bunch of anger and indoctrination.

Bevo, how about finding Herdfan and apologizing, in good faith, for some harshness and recruit him back here. This board could be vibrant, balanced and entertaining again if we could get guys like him, the ultra football cerebral CJ Hawkeye, Bucs90 , AUfan, and even crazy Zoombag back here again

Hmnnn.. that might be a bridge too far. (JUST KIDIDNG!) The others were all great. I still converse with Herd via email frequently. We have no animosity. 95% of his bickering was not real. He was just doing it for fun. That's what got old with me. He was considering coming back a few months ago. He probably would, with a little encouragement. I wish we could get NCT and Hokie back. They were libs, but they certainly weren't crazy, or mean.
