Here's a question for the FCS experts on the board: What was the lowest seed for a FCS playoff champion? Who was the biggest upset champion? I'll leave that to BH. For NCAA championships in general, my guess would be 2008 Fresno State baseball, which had lost 27 regular season games. The Bulldogs were seeded last in the Long Beach regional, which was one of 16 regionals. So, Fresno State was one of the bottom 16 in a 64-team field, which equates to between 49th and 64th overall.
Interesting.. great run for Fresno. I note, they were ranked #17 in pre-season polls... then, faltered during the season. 27 losses during the season, and yet.. they still got a chance to play for the Championship. I'd say, the regular season in baseball doesn't have much value. But then, that is already known. No one watches it.

Since there are only 4 'seeded' teams in the NCAA D1 football playoffs I would guess the answer to be 4
Do they seed more in the D2 or D3 fields?
How many teams enter the tourney in the D1 field?
The NCAA doesn't officially seed teams for the DIII playoffs and tries to minimize travel with regional match ups and brackets. I was wrong about the 4 seeds for the D1 playoff. Now that the field has expanded to 24 teams, 8 teams are now seeded and receive first round byes.

"Villanova is in the Big East, which I would consider a "Major" Conference... for Basketball, at least." Lol. Evolving definitions.
"I don't recall asking about baseball championships? Am I supposed to respond to every random answer you give?" Yes you are.
It is evident that your preconception that "little schools" are incapable of competing against the "big boys" in playoffs has been devastated. Since you are so defensive about this, I advise that you do all you can within your sphere of influence to keep the CFP to only 4 teams.

I've already conceded that "size" of the school is not the right measure, especially for basketball. Villanova is a #2 seed, champion of a major conference. They're a 'giant'. My concern is not the size of the school, it's 'how many teams can be, should be accommodated in a playoff that doesn't take forever to play. I've said, many times, that I think 8 is the right number for FBS football.... And, I'm willing to guarantee at least one spot to the highest ranked G5 conference team. (More, if they're ranked high enough) From that, you come up with yet another long list of false accusations. It's very time consuming, cleaning up your messes.

"I've already conceded that "size" of the school is not the right measure, especially for basketball. Villanova is a #2 seed, champion of a major conference. They're a 'giant'." Translation: any team that regularly beats the "big boys" in national championships is automatically one of the "big boys". Butler, Villanova, Gonzaga, etc.
"My concern is not the size of the school, it's 'how many teams can be, should be accommodated in a playoff that doesn't take forever to play." You are a member of a very tiny group who are complaining about the size of the NCAA Championship field.
"I've said, many times, that I think 8 is the right number for FBS football.... And, I'm willing to guarantee at least one spot to the highest ranked G5 conference team. (More, if they're ranked high enough)"" The G5 conferences comprise half of FBS -- you are so magnanimous. The big question is: who gets to make up the rules? If it is the P5 conferences, then the selection process will continue to be biased against teams from G5 conferences. A rigged process lacks legitimacy.
"From that, you come up with yet another long list of false accusations. It's very time consuming, cleaning up your messes." My heart bleeds for you.

Translation: any team that regularly beats the "big boys" in national championships is automatically one of the "big boys". Butler, Villanova, Gonzaga, etc. Well... duh! That's how you GET to be a "Big Boy".... by winning, You are a member of a very tiny group who are complaining about the size of the NCAA Championship field. Not sure which Championship you're talking about? Quite a few people have complained about adding more than 64 to the BBall tourney. It's silly. I have no problem with 64. Only 32 are really needed, but... in BBall, it's just as easy, time-wise, to play 64 as 32... so, why not? If it was 32, the regular season would be more important. That's for sure. The big question is: who gets to make up the rules? He who has the gold makes the rules. It is known. Yet another blatant falsehood from you. It's really starting to become a habit.

Gotcha.
In FBS, Boise State, Marshall, Western Kentucky, Houston, Toledo and Appalachian State are "Big Boys". South Carolina, Colorado, Purdue, Illinois, Maryland, Iowa State, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Wake Forest and Virginia are "Little Boys", and Kansas is a "Wannabe".
Somewhere in there is a thought that is struggling to be cogent. I think.
In fairy tales.
Now, that really cuts. My heart really does bleed for you.

In FBS, Boise State, Marshall, Western Kentucky, Houston, Toledo and Appalachian State are "Big Boys". Uh..no. Boise State is getting close... by winning consistently over a number of years. Houston? Similarly... starting to build a resume. But, not many 'signature wins' just yet. Marshall and Western? no. You don't get to be "Big? by beating a bunch of nothings. Somewhere in there is a thought that is struggling to be cogent. I think. you just keep studying it... You might figure it out, one day. And, in life.

I don't have a problem with the P5 conferences playing their make believe post-season "championship". However, as long as it is not under the auspices of the NCAA, it will lack legitimacy.
