The big question is, will our friend the Hen still consider the playoff an invitation and not worthy of true, National Championship status?

So, based on that wording, there's no guarantee the G5 champ gets an auto bid. There's no guarantee that ANY Conference Champ gets in. There could be two G5 Champs get auto-selected.

I like the idea, but I'm betting it will get mired in the details. For example:
-How do you keep the bowls relevant? How will the major 6 bowls be integrated into this 12 team format? -How do you handle independent teams, specifically Notre Dame? Under this format, it looks like Notre Dame would have no shot at obtaining a bye -How do you handle conference championship losers? If there is no penalty for losing a conference championship game, what is the value of that game? Doesn't this degrade the regular season?
The 12 team idea is good, but I think it is overly ambitious...IMO, you might see more of a compromise, and possibly an 8-10 team playoff first

Sounds to me like it’s a done deal?
Notre Dame will need to join a conference if the want a shot at a bye.
The Rose Bowl is the only one that has been inflexible so far. They’re going to have some tough decisions to make.
The regular season gets weaker. No question. As do the bowls. The worst part, to me is, you get a bunch of teams playing who don’t deserve any shot. But, that’s what you get with bloated tournament fields.

Too many teams...
- Several 2-loss, 3-loss teams - First Round Byes - Auto-bids - Leads to several rematches
Absolute nightmare it's OK for college football to be unique -- stop forcing it to be NFL Jr
“Were changing it for teams like UCF and the Boise States out there….”
Same person ranks a 11-0 G5 team outside the top 15 in the second to last week behind a 3-loss SEC team

Playing for a top 12 ranking is different than playing for a top 4 ranking.

GOOD - way more meaningful regular season games , especially late season qualifying showdowns. GOOD - winning something in the regular season finally has value ( although 10 AQs woud be better than 6)
POOR - still unfair tokenism when 50% of the entire FBS has only guaranteed access to 8% of the participation in this event.
STILL BULLSHIT - Everything is sill based on "rankings".....ranked ranked ranked ranked ETC.. top 6 champs ranked, Top 'ranked 4 teams get byes 'Ranked #5 plays ranked # 9 etc. Rankings are still a mythical combination of human biases, opinions, perceptions, name brand recognition and heavy TV lobbying....no good.

The whole move to 12 is money-driven. Why do they have to ruin the best post-season in sports? Money. Who benefits from 12 teams? SEC teams that can't get past Bama, and the P-12. Likely get 5-6 SEC teams each year. Is that what people want? If the proposed format had been in place since 2014, 15 three-loss teams would have gotten in the playoff, including 4 in 2016 and 2018. Do we want 3-loss teams playing? Saban correctly predicted that four-team playoffs - and more specifically the media’s obsession with it - would hurt the bowl system. It certainly has, but a playoff expansion would be the final straw. Traditions will fade. That’s sad. The scenarios for conference championship game losers are a bit ridiculous. On one hand, if they drop out of the top 12 with a loss, then they would be better off not qualifying. They shouldn’t be punished for winning their division. What if they’re securely in the top 12, but have to play an elite team for the conference championship? Can they opt out? Teams without hope of making the playoff will really have nothing to play for. The already de-valued trips to bowl games, further exeacerbated by NFL draft opt-outs, will be rendered even less entertaning. Would fans of teams that are 5-4 have any reason to watch the remainder of their season? Who cares about a bowl invite (if they even still exist)? The system we have now is the best in sports at crowning the most deserving champion. Only one time in the playoff era could you even consider arguing that a team “got hot” and won. The 2014 Buckeyes would be that team, but they were also highly deserving of being there. The best teams will still usually win in a 12-team format, but injuries and randomness will play a larger role. Why not have a G5 CFP as well? That would be more exciting than watching some Pennzoil bowl played in BFE.

Playing for a top 12 ranking is different than playing for a top 4 ranking. ya, there will be more teams trying to make the field, so more possible meaningful games, right?
If LSU or Penn State is 9-3 and trying to get into the playoffs, their games actually have meaning now
teams ranked #1-6 will be battling for a bye, which will probably be HUGE

Even the college world series is based off of rankings for seeding purposes

You're still going to have the top teams that get byes winning it all...if anything you'll have 1 good team emerge from the rest of the field that might make it to the semifinals
Most of all, the games will be played on the field, not in the minds of mindless twats hired by ESPN...good bye eye test

This won't be too much different than the FCS - just fewer at-large picks, which apparently there are 14 of in FCS and picked by a selection committee as indicated below.... Team selection At-large selections and seeding within the bracket are determined by the FCS Playoff Selection Committee, which consists of one athletic director from each conference with an automatic bid.[13] As of the 2018 season, there are 10 conferences with automatic bids and the selection committee makes 14 at-large selections.[13] For the 2018 season, the committee was chaired by Dr. Brad Teague of the University of Central Arkansas.[14]
