2020 CFP matchups if new format was used: 5 Texas A&M vs 12 Coastal Carolina 6 Oklahoma vs 11 Indiana 7 Florida vs 10 Iowa State 8 Cincinnati vs 9 Georgia Those are sweet matchups, who wouldn't want this??
I think Coastal would have a real shot at beating the Aggies
OU probably would have trounced a Penix-less Indiana Florida vs. Iowa State would have been fun to watch Georgia really beat Cincy in a close one

Sure, they'd be fun games to watch in some Bowl. But ALL of those teams forfeited any legitimate claim to be National Champion by their play in the regular season. Mulligans were EXCEEDINGLY RARE in college football. Now, they are systemically awarded to many.

Like Saban said, the myopic focus on the playoff has / will kill the post season bowl process. It pretty much already has, and moving to 12 should put the nail in the coffin.
Some of the other / notable bowls that would presumably remain:
Citrus Holiday Gator Sun Mayo Music City Outback Pinstripe
There could be as many as 25 other bowls beyond these, but they were already rendered meaningless and often hard to watch. With an expanded playoff, players on teams that don’t earn a berth will be even more likely to opt-out than what we’ve seen in recent years. Does that spell the end of bowl season? Yes.
Sure, bowl bids will be accepted - to get the extra practices. I'm sure ESPN will be willing to air them, but they’ll be gutted of their best players and any sense of importance.
Maybe we could move some of these to Week 0 and play them as "kick-off" bowls or games? I think a lot of schools and bowls might want that kind oattention?

I think I might like the idea of pre-season exhibitions vs post season exhibitions. NFL and MLB do it that way and it seems to make sense and is essential to roster management. Big stars likely wouldn't quit their teams in pre-season .

Expound on that,CPA...thanks The author implies that expanding to 12 teams will solve the predictability of the "always the same teams in the final four". Expansion alone is unlikely to solve that problem, until other teams get stronger and are able to compete with Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State. Simply increasing the number of participants does not equate to a similar increase in parity.

Hen, have you seen the movie "Lawless" about Franklin County, VA, aka, the "wettest county in the USA"?
It's about the massive bootlegging going on in that county during the prohibition / depression years.

Since 2018, just more than half of all 5-star recruits landed at Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State or Georgia. Four schools, half the 5-stars over a 4-year period.
Just 6 schools (+Texas & LSU) inked at least 1 5-star in each of the last 4 classes.
Just 25 inked a single 5-star.

Those programs should never lose or even have close games except when they play each other.

That is a really awesome idea or why not make some of the conference championship games bowl games?? i mean the Peach Bowl and SEC championship are virtually the same thing. Very few bowl games now are actually linked to their stadium. The Cotton and Orange have been separated from their actual stadiums

" if you want to stay atop polls and post great records, schedule Mercer " - Nick Saban LOL yea right. Bama gets all those high rankings and titles because of their win streak against Mercer! Quick, someone tell the Texas AD! GET MERCER ON OUR SCHEDULE!!!! Sometimes, you take this nonsense just a BIT too far, Hen.
