It is going to happen. It also looks like it might be more than two teams. I have heard that the Big Ten is "unofficially" exploring several options. The number one scenario (as of now) appears to be USC, Washington, Arizona, and Colorado. They would be in a nine-team Western Division with Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Northwestern. Eight divisional games, one crossover game with NW-Ill being protected (like Ind-Pur is now). If they can get two ACC teams (UVA, UNC, GIT, Clemson, FSU, and ND being the primary targets, those two team would go in the East and Illinois would move to the west. Nine divisional games, no crossovers.
You could expect the eight Big 12 leftovers and the eight Pac 12 leftovers to merge.

The SEC would love to have Clemson and Florida State but it's not likely going to happen. At least from local SC sources around here.
While Florida State and Clemson would love to take the added revenue the SEC has with their TV deal with Disney/ESPN, they aren't going to be let out of the ACC, nor are they pursuing a leave.
FWIW

I don't think the SEC was talking to FSU, Clemson, Michigan, and Ohio State to get any of them into the SEC. I think they were trying to get them on board with convincing their conferences to split from the NCAA with the SEC. The last thing the SEC wants is to announce they are leaving the SEC only to have the Big Ten and ACC stay put.

The P4 P5 need to break away from the inconsistency of the NCAA overlord.

When I was thinking about the best scenario for expansion for the Big 10 I thought that Clemson and North Carolina made the most sense. Not crazy about the Pac 12 scenario.
I would have 4 pods of 4 teams. Each year 2 pods would combine as a division to get 2 division champions that play for the championship. These pods would rotate which division they are in each year.

Arizona is an odd add
I wonder if the SEC will move on FSU and Clemson if they think the Big 10 might add them. I'm sure ESPN doesn't want to lose these properties

Arizona State is NOT AAU; Arizona is. If they take Pac 12 teams, they will be AAU.

The ACC network is part of the Disney/ESPN empire, so there would be no loss to ESPN

Too often there’s a belief that doing something fast and stupid is better than methodical and smart.
