When Bama beat Ohio State like a rented mule earlier this year was that power or perception? Yep you beat us sound. Keep in mind that tOSU only had 6 games and maybe 3 games in the last 2 months leading up to the CFP. Last year was just a wierd season.

Sure the B10 did too .Makes no difference what league benefits. In true sport you don't fill 4 team, so called, 'playoffs' based on perceived talent. Actual standings should have more value...but then again big time , so called, college football has always had an exhibition style post season vs a championship post season. It's TV driven show business. Alabama benefits everytime Ohio State Benefits when it is TCU or Baylor. It is a flawed system. Alabama has DESERVED IT... every single time. The B12 teams think the B1G get preferential treatment.

Alabama benefits everytime Ohio State Benefits when it is TCU or Baylor. It is a flawed system. Alabama has DESERVED IT... every single time. The B12 teams think the B1G get preferential treatment. So in 2011 the Alabama team that had one loss and did not even win its own division deserved it over 2 one loss teams that won there conference? And yes, the B1G got preferential treatment in 2014. Absolutely no doubt in my mind that being tOSU played a part in that decision.

I will say winning 59-0 in their championship game made a pretty strong case for OSU, especially when the other 2 teams tied and didn't have a championship game. And they backed it up in the playoff. If you want to lay blame, blame the Big 12 conference for not having a tie breaker plan and deciding to recognize co-champions. If you're TCU, don't blow a 3 TD lead in the 4th quarter.

All valid points but then again tOSU got manhandled by VT earlier in the year. TCU's only loss was a 3 point game to Baylor. I think they were number 3 in the rankings and then dropped to number 6 after winning their last game by 40 points. Excluding last season because there were so many variations in schedules, only 2 teams have made the BSC\CFP playoffs without winning their own conference. BAMA twice and tOSU once. What is the probability of teams with similar seasons making it if they had Illinois or Kentucky on their helmets?

So Ohio State was moving toward a tying TD. Manhandled may be a little strong - OSU outgained VT by a small margin. What was unforgiveable was allowing the back-up QB to lead a TD drive for the go ahead score after OSU tied it up early in the 4th quarter. JT had only played 1 previous game and he made a poor pass on the interception. But it was an earlier loss than those by Baylor and TCU. Just a strange set of circumstances but OSU did back it up by winning the playoff and MANHANDLING Oregon in the championship game.

I didn't recall that game being that close. Looks like we were tied in the fourth. I just remember losing by 14 and felt like we just were not a very good team at the time. After the Wiscy game our group went back to the hotel and watched Mark May blow a gasket when Lou Holtz trolled him. Holtz told May is that the only reason he could never dot the 'i' is because he can't spell. Anyway, we had no clue if they were going to make it until the selection show that we listen to on the way back from Indy. That being said I agree they made the right decsions and tOSU backed it up but I do think name recognition helped in the selection process.

I think they proved that their selection was justified by stomping the dogshit out of LSU. Maybe, the Tigers didn't belong there? Bama did the same thing in 2017-18... Selected as a Non-Champ, then crushed everyone. In the CFP era, 4 non-P5 Champs have been selected: Bama - 1 (WON the title) Ohio State - 1 (LOST 31-0 in the Semis to Clemson) Notre Dame - 2 (LOST badly, twice in Semis) Maybe, the committee is a little too Catholic?

I don't care much for these type conversations but the B1G has multiple "benefit of the doubt" entries into the playoffs who embarrassingly proved themselves totally unprepared to compete at the highest level.
We can go over every wretched detail of my point if you want. You may want this conversation to begin and end with Alabama but reality and history tell a far different story.

In general, does the SEC (which we all agree is the most talented in FB) still get 'ranking' privileges in this mythical system ?

My guess is you're referring to MSU in 2015 and OSU in 2016. Fact is, there were only 2 deserving, elite teams those years - Alabama and Clemson. I think the 2015 OSU team was far better than the 2016 team but for some unexplainable reason they laid an egg against MSU which cost them a shot at a repeat. To say the 2014 OSU team got the benefit of the doubt and proved embarrassingly unprepared isn't fair since they won it all. Some years there are only two elite teams and many, many times Alabama is one of them. I don't dispute any of their championships. I don't dispute any of Clemson's or LSU's in 2019/20. They're all legit.

In general, does the SEC (which we all agree is the most talented in FB) still get 'ranking' privileges in this mythical system ? Probably... yes. Past history still influences opinions, although... I think the shelf-life on past success is short. Past preferences given to SEC teams have made the committee look smart. Some of the other preferences? Not so much.

Some years there are only two elite teams and many, many times Alabama is one of them. I agree strongly with this. This is the downside to adding a bunch of teams to the playoffs. Sometimes, the results aren't pretty.
