Would Penn State still deserve to go over Ohio State in that case due to their H2H win? In the NFL, a 12-4 team is still going to be seeded higher than an 11-5 team even if the 11-5 team beat the 12-4 team H2H.
Easy answer: NO
Because then, Penn State would not have the EXTRA win that comes with the CCG game... Ohio State would get it.
That extra win MATTERS... it's not "just a win"... it's a conference Championship.
However, Iowa DID make that FG... and, Ohio State will NOT be getting that extra win.

Don't forget, had Iowa missed that late field goal and did not upset Michigan...Ohio State would be the "division champ" playing in the Big Ten Title Game. Would Penn State still deserve to go over Ohio State in that case due to their H2H win? In the NFL, a 12-4 team is still going to be seeded higher than an 11-5 team even if the 11-5 team beat the 12-4 team H2H. At the end of the day, you have to look at all of the games including OOC play. Penn State may have the better resume if you only counted conference play and ignored 25% of the season. So they rightfully earned a spot in the conference title game. But for the NATIONAL playoff, you have to consider non conference games too which means you have to consider that Ohio State handled Oklahoma while Penn State lost to Pitt. I have no bias here and honestly don't know or care which team is better or more deserving. It's that close. I just think OSU is going to be in no matter what and I kind of see the logic. If the favorites all win, I think the decision for the 4th spot is going to be between Washington and Penn State. So...first of all....do you think if Clemson and Washington win, that they'll jump Ohio State? 12-1 ACC Champ Clemson 12-1 PAC 12 Champ Washington 11-1 Ohio State I'd bet A LOT of money that they do....Better record and Conf Champ > SOS If you don't agree with that logic, then I think you've got a problem with how the CFP works. So....................... With that said.......... Ohio State will be pushed down to #4....and if Penn State wins, then it's a debate between Ohio State and Penn State. And the Ohio State argument is feeble...."we're better". "Better Resume" (which is debatable). "We have a better record" Penn State's argument: "We won the game/scoreboard/H2H/on-the-field". "We won the B1G Conference." The Oklahoma win is impressive, but Penn State and Ohio State played on the field, for what amounted to the East Division Title. Ohio State lost.... I think Ohio State, in battling for the fourth spot, loses that argument....OSU needs Wisconsin to win, and then they can claim H2H

*Ichigan is in the worst spot - 2 losses and no conf championship - the only team in the T10 with that situation.
I guess it comes down to how much you trust the cte.?
We can reasonably assume Alabama will be in the Playoff regardless of whether it beats Florida in the SEC Championship. A loss, however, could put the Tide at risk of forfeiting the No. 1 seed because of their lack of a conference title. I would think the only team that has any kind of shot at stealing that spot from Bama is Clemson (if the Tigers beat Virginia Tech). The logic there would be the Tigers picking up a conference championship “trump card”, if you will.
The toughest potential scenario for the committee is the most likely one, where Clem and Wash both win their games this weekend. In this scenario, there is no correct answer. The committee would be guaranteed to burn a team that has a legitimate claim to be included in the Playoff.
If Penn State wins, your guess is as good as mine. Ohio State would still have the better resume if you look purely at quality of wins and losses, but when you add a conference title to Penn State’s resume, it suddenly puts the teams on a bit more even footing. Couldn’t you then look at head-to-head as a deciding factor? The committee has clearly valued head-to-head results all season - almost to a fault. Is the combination of a Penn State conference title and a head-to-head win over the Buckeyes enough for them to drop a team that appears to be a solid No. 2 completely out of the four-team field?

Oh... I'm glad to see Fox published the article I wrote for them! I don't need any credit.
Just for the record, I also have NO FAVORITE when it comes to Penn State vs Ohio State. If anything, I prefer the Buckeyes. They have a fan who buys lunches for me.
Penn State (with Paterno) was always one of my most hated teams. My only interest is: Fairness, and consistency from the CFP. If Penn State beats Wisconsin by more than 3 points? I think they clearly deserve the nod over Ohio State. Same with Clemson.. and, I'd have to say the same about a 12-1 Washington team.
It would be a SAD thing for Ohio State, but..... not getting to play in the CCG hurts. Just like it hurts Big 12 teams that don't get a chance to play the extra game. Winning your conference MATTERS, for this reason alone: It gives a team an opportunity for an extra "quality" win.

That said...I agree with you GG on this point: The Committee WANTS to have Ohio State in the CFP. I'm sure they are PRAYING for an excuse to not have to choose between PSU and OSU.

OK, so Penn State would get a win over Wisconsin. Ohio State already beat Wisconsin. If both teams had just one loss I would completely agree that the committee would side with Penn State but as their resumes stand right now, I just don't see it happening. My brother in law is a PSU Grad so I'm hoping I'm wrong for his sake but I would be willing to bet otherwise.

If PSU had only 1 loss, there should be ZERO discussion about Ohio State passing them.
As it is, I think it's close.... Maybe "brand name" wins out. I don't see any other factor that would make such a difference. Penn State is on a roll... 8 wins in a row, including a win over OSU. They're playing as well as anybody not named "Alabama".

Also, when Ohio State played Wisconsin, was it in the B1G Championship game? There are some solid facts here that sort of preclude comparing resumes...that's why this Ohio State-Penn State debate is laughable. Comparing resumes? This is the one case where you DON'T have to compare resumes in college football....Penn State won on the field, beating Ohio State, and that's what sent them to the B1G Championship Does College football want to be CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL, or Rock-star Amateur Hour, where Ohio State is pretty enough to get in over the champion of their own conference that they lost to....what will the Wizards of Oz behind the curtain do?? I bet they are praying for Wisconsin to win lol

I feel pretty confident that OSU is going to be in regardless of what happens on Saturday. I'm not saying I would agree or be rooting for it to happen, that's just how it's going to go. If either of you all want to bet on it let me know!
