What if I told you that the MLB records for… • strikeouts in a season; • strikeouts in a career; • seasons with 200+ strikeouts; • seasons with 300+ strikeouts; • no-hitters; • one-hitters; • two-hitters; and • three-hitters …were all held by the same player? You forgot what, imo, is the most impressive record: Lifetime lowest batting average against. The hardest pitcher to get a hit on, ever… over one of the longest careers ever. Truth! Dude averaged 14 W, >230 IP, >240K and a <3.20 ERA for 27 SEASONS! They have interviewed so many hitters who said they literally have nightmares about facing him on the mound. The least-hittable pitcher in history.

If you are not the best pitcher in your league in 28 seasons.......not even one single time, how can you be the greatest of all time ? ....ZERO Cy Young awards. Nolan's great un -hitability somehow didn't quite transfer to winning, although he pitched on teams with a collective winning record (2104-2048), contrary to the bad team myth and excuse. Nolan's .526 career win % ranked 535th best last time I checked. 310 other pitchers were also better at keeping opponents off base than Nolan (WHIP #s). Nobody in MLB history was anything as bad as Nolan when it came to command and control......career leader in walks issued (by a TON) and wild pitches. He pitched for the Angels, Rangers , Astros and Mets. Nolan does Not show up in the top ten among Angels pitchers, top ten among Astro pitchers or top ten among Rangers pitchers in winning %. He does show up in the top ten among Mets pitchers in win % but behind Gooden, Seaver, Cone, Darling and Martinez. No doubt, Nolan had great, great un-hitable stuff at times but his control and command problems at other times cost him and his teams. Joe Poznansky, baseball writer, described Nolan quite accurately, imo. " Of all things pitchers do, Nolan Ryan could do them better, and of all things pitchers do Nolan Ryan could do them worse." Nolan was a great athletic talent but a two sided coin.

And no Tommy John surgery because he knew the mechanics
I’ve long contended there should be a “Nolan Ryan Award” — to be given to the best pitcher without run support.

Verlander has a very good shot at the HOF. He has 26 complete games over his career. Here's the list of CG leaders from the 1968 season:

I miss the 'complete game' era of MLB. Aaron Nola pitched a complete game shutout yesterday for my Phillies ( vs Mets ) . How rare and refreshing.
